Zell am See / Kaprun
In the summer period, everyone will find something to their liking in Zell am See. This charming town lies on the Zeller See (13 km circumference), a magnificent lake with many opportunities for water sports. Here you can swim and surf, and hire a pedal boat, electric boat or sailing boat. The water is clear blue and has the quality of drinking water. A boat tour around the lake is also possible. The boat stops in several places. You can visit, for instance, the village of Thumersbach, with its beautiful park with playground and top class swimming pool. From the pool you look down on the lake and up to the white mountain tops of Kaprun. A ski lift can take you to one of the alpine meadows to wander around or to have lunch or a refreshment in one of the Almhütten.
Would you prefer to take it easy? Then the boulevard, the shopping streets or one of the many outdoor cafés are just what you are looking for.In summer the town festivals are organised, with live music in the evening, various market stalls and outdoor cafés, and magnificent fireworks from the Zeller See to close off the festivities.
In summer, too, Kaprun attracts many tourists. With its lively outdoor cafés and its charming shops and restaurants, against the background of the snow-white peaks of the Kitzsteinhorn, this is a great place to be. One the many options for excursions in the surroundings is a walk to the castle of Kaprun (where, for instance, the annual Schützenfeste – shooting festival – is held), a visit to the automobile museum, or even a day of fun in the snow on the glacier of the Kitzsteinhorn.
In the nearby town of Mittersill you can pay a visit to the Welten national park, where you can see, for instance, how glaciers and avalanches come about. An interactive centre, also for the children.
